Colonial Iron Nails - How Where They Made?
As with any sturdy building, you’ll need a durable set of nails to hold the structure together. We may have ready access to building nails now, but back then each nail would have to be hand-wrought by smiths. In fact, nails were so valuable that they were considered trade commodities within some communities. The manufacture of nails was important to the colonist’s success in creating the towns and villages that became the foundation of the country.
Smiths in Colonial times would create dozens of nails from a single squared iron rod. This rod would then be heated until it glowed red, afterward they would hammer it on all sides to create a pointed end. They’d then cut the rod to a specific length which would vary depending on individual blacksmiths. From here, the smiths would form the head of the nail in a wide variety of designs and shapes depending on its purpose and the needs of the community.
The reason why nails had to be created individually was due to trade laws protecting the manufacturers and factories back in Great Britain. The country already had the infrastructure to create nails by the thousands, something that the U.S. wouldn’t get for years onwards. An import route was created to bring English iron nails to the colony, usually at a more affordable price compared to hand-wrought iron nails.
It wouldn’t be until the advent of the 1800s that nail-cutting machines would be introduced to the colonies, further increasing their capacity to manufacture pure iron nails. These new nails were different from the handmade ones as they had a certain consistency to them when it came to thickness.
